Our body needs vitamins in order to grow and function normally. Among them all, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, one of the main building blocks of our bones. It also plays an important role in the nervous, muscular and immune systems.
For all these reasons, vitamin D is vitally important for our health, and yet there is a significant deficiency of this vitamin among the Spanish population.
The main supply to our body comes from synthesis in the skin, but over the past year we have spent less time outdoors because of the pandemic, which has made vitamin D deficiency higher across the whole population.
Dr José Manuel Quesada Gómez, of the Clinical Management Unit for Endocrinology and Nutrition at Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía in Córdoba, explains what therapeutic options are available to address this deficiency.
