At the IMCA World 2024 Congress, a range of topics were addressed in the field of aesthetic medicine. However, I want to begin by focusing on one of the subjects I consider especially relevant, rosacea, and over the coming days I will share other, equally interesting topics with you.
ROSACEA. AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO ITS TREATMENT
During the recent session at the IMCAS event, we had the chance to immerse ourselves in the latest developments in the treatment of rosacea, a condition that affects millions of people around the world. What makes this meeting especially fascinating is the new approach being taken to treating this dermatological condition, placing gut health and its impact on skin inflammation at the centre
The relationship between rosacea and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) has been a subject of growing interest among dermatologists and gastroenterologists. The evidence presented suggests that, before considering the use of antibiotics (which has been the traditional approach), we should direct treatment towards improving the gut microbiota. This is because a healthy microbiota can significantly reduce the facial inflammation associated with rosacea.
A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH IS KEY
It is vital to recognise that rosacea does not exist in a vacuum. Other conditions, such as certain gastrointestinal diseases, may be closely related to its appearance and to its worsening. For that reason, the session stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach that considers the patient's general wellbeing, beyond treating the skin symptoms alone.
TOWARDS A MICROBIOTA-TARGETED THERAPY
The proposal to direct the treatment of rosacea towards improving the gut microbiota opens up new avenues for research and therapy. This approach aims not only to relieve the symptoms of rosacea more effectively but also to improve the patient's general health, highlighting the interconnection between gut and skin health
This change of paradigm is an exciting opportunity for health professionals, patients and the scientific community to explore more holistic, less invasive treatments that may offer lasting results and fewer side effects.
A CALL FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
The intersection between dermatology and gastroenterology has never been more relevant. This meeting at IMCAS reminds us of the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in tackling complex conditions such as rosacea, where gut health plays a crucial role
I invite my colleagues, my patients and everyone interested in health care to explore these new frontiers in the treatment of rosacea together. Together, we can move towards more effective and more compassionate solutions that address the underlying causes of the condition, not just its symptoms.
